sane / sān/ • adj. (of a person) of sound mind; not mad or mentally ill: hard work kept me sane. ∎  (of an undertaking or manner) reasonable; sensible. DERIVATIVES: sane·ly adv. sane·ness n. ORIGIN: early 17th cent.: from Latin sanus ‘healthy.’
