gim·bal / ˈgimbəl; ˈjim-/ • n. (often gimbals) a contrivance, typically consisting of rings pivoted at right angles, for keeping an instrument such as a compass or chronometer horizontal in a moving vessel or aircraft. DERIVATIVES: gim·baled (or gim·balled) adj.
