cassette

cassette Nominally another name for cartridge; in practice the term is normally reserved for the type of cassette originally introduced by Philips for audio purposes under the trademark Compact Cassette. For computer use, more robust drives and higher precision cassettes are available.

The digital audio tape cartridge is sometimes referred to as a cassette.

cas·sette / kəˈset/ • n. a sealed plastic unit containing a length of audiotape wound on a pair of spools, for insertion into a recorder or playback device. ∎  a similar unit containing videotape, film, or other material for insertion into a machine.

cassette (Fr.). Little box. Literally the small package into which a commercial tape-recording is packed but in a wider sense the automatic-rewinding tape itself. Record-playing equipment now generally provides facilities for playing cassettes. Many disc recordings are also issued in cassette form.
