Gielgud, Sir (Arthur) John (1904–2000) British stage and film actor and director. He played almost every major Shakespearian role, and appeared in The Importance of Being Earnest (1930, 1939) and The Cherry Orchard (1961). He achieved popular success in many films, such as Arthur (1981), for which he won an Oscar, Gandhi (1982), The Shooting Party (1985) and Prospero's Books (1991). He was knighted in 1953.
