Kyushu Island in s Japan; the third-largest and southernmost of the four principal Japanese islands. The terrain is mountainous, and the irregular coastline provides many natural harbours. It is the most densely populated of the Japanese islands. The chief port is Nagasaki. Products: rice, tea, tobacco, fruit, soya beans. Industries: mining, fishing, timber, textiles, porcelain, metals, machinery. Area: 42,149sq km (16,274sq mi). Pop. (2000) 14,764,000.
