Jinan (Tsinan or Chi-nan) City in e China, 225mi (362km) s of Peking, near the Huang He river; capital of Shandong province. An ancient walled city dating from Chou dynasty (1122–256 bc), it has been provincial capital since Ming dynasty (1368–1644); scene of battle during Communist takeover 1948 causing heavy loss of Nationalist forces. Industries: textiles, vegetable oils, chemicals, machine shops, food processing, paper, trucks, agricultural machinery, flour, iron, steel. Pop. 1,100,000.
