Gómez de Avellaneda, Gertrudis

Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda (hĕrtrōō´ŧħēs gō´mĕth dā ävĕlyänā´ŧħä), 1814–73, Spanish poet, b. Cuba. She went to Spain in 1836. Her passionate and poignant verses reflecting an unhappy love affair won her a high place among Spanish romantic poets. She also wrote problem novels, such as the antislavery El Mulato Sab (1841), and dramas on historical and religious subjects, including Alfonso Munio (1844), Saúl (1849), and Baltasar (1858).
