Battenberg
Battenberg name of a family of German counts who died out in the 14th century; in 1858, the name was revived for the offspring of a morganatic marriage of a prince of the German state of Hesse. In 1917 the members of the family who were connected with the British royal family and lived in England, renounced the German title of prince of Battenberg and took instead the surname Mountbatten.
