Chitinodendron franconianum Single-celled organisms are known from Precambrian strata, but the first protozoans with an external skeleton appear in the Upper Cambrian. C. franconianum is a primitive allogrominid ‘foraminiferid with an external ‘chitinoid’ membrane. It is from the Upper Cambrian of Wisconsin, USA.
