Corfu

Corfu (Kérkyra) Island in nw Greece, second largest of the Ionian island group; the major town is Corfu. In 433 bc, the island was allied with Athens against Corinth. The Romans held Corfu from 229 bc, and it was part of the Byzantine Empire until the 11th century. It was occupied by the Venetians (1386–1797), and then fell under British protection (1809–64), when it passed to Greece. Products: olives, fruit, livestock, wine. Tourism and fishing are important industries. Area: 593sq km (229sq mi). Pop. (2001 est.) 113,000.
