Limpopo (river, S Africa)

Limpopo (lĬmpō´pō), river, c.1,100 mi (1,770 km) long, rising in Limpopo prov., South Africa. It flows in a great arc, first north (forming part of the South Africa–Botswana border), then east (forming the South Africa–Zimbabwe border), and finally southeast through Mozambique to the Indian Ocean. The upper Limpopo is also known as the Krokodil, or Crocodile. The river's main tributary, the Olifants, enters the Limpopo c.130 mi (210 km) from its mouth; below this point the Limpopo is permanently navigable. The lower Limpopo waters a fertile and heavily populated region.

Limpopo

Limpopo (Crocodile) River in s Africa. It rises in ne South Africa, in the former Transvaal province. It then flows in a great curve n, forming part of the border between South Africa and Botswana, then e as the border of South Africa and Zimbabwe, before crossing Mozambique to enter the Indian Ocean ne of Maputo. Length: c.1770km (1100mi).

Limpopo

Limpopo Province in n South Africa, formerly Northern Province (renamed 2002); the capital is Pietersburg. Northern Province was formed from the n part of the former province of Transvaal in 1994. Area: 123,280sq km (46,970sq mi). Pop. (2002 est.) 5,857,622.
