suffocation disease A disease of rice in which reddish-brown patches spread from the tips of the leaves downwards; the roots of the plants blacken and rot. The condition is encouraged by poorly drained soils and appears to be associated with the production of toxic levels of hydrogen sulphide by bacteria in the soil.
