[tr.] destroy or damage (metal, stone, or other materials) slowly by chemical action. ∎  [intr.] (of metal or other materials) be destroyed or damaged in this way. ∎ fig. destroy or weaken (something) gradually: the self-centered climate corrodes ideals and concerns about social justice.
