chomp / chämp; chômp/ • v. [intr.] 1. munch or chew vigorously and noisily: he chomped on his sandwich. ∎  (of a horse) make a noisy biting or chewing action. 2. fret impatiently. • n. [in sing.] a chewing noise or action. PHRASES: chomp (or champ or chafe) at the bit be restless and impatient to start doing something.
