chasm / ˈkazəm/ • n. a deep fissure in the earth, rock, or another surface. ∎ fig. a profound difference between people, viewpoints, feelings, etc.: the chasm between rich and poor. DERIVATIVES: chas·mic / ˈkazmik/ adj. ( rare ).
