ukiyo-e

ukiyo-e Japanese paintings and woodblock prints that were prevalent in the Edo period (1615–1867). Their subject matter included people engaged in everyday activities as well as Kabuki actors. Moronobu (c.1625–95) is generally considered the originator of the true ukiyo-e print; he gained renown for his woodcut illustrations for popular literature. Other famous ukiyo-e printmakers were Harunobu, Hiroshige, Hokusai, Kiyonaga, Sharaku, and Utamaro.
