except

except2 †pp. excepted; prep. if one leaves out of account XIV; †conj. unless XV; otherwise than XVI. — L. exceptus, pp. of excipere (see prec.) The prep. arose (i) partly from the use of the pp. in concord with a following sb. or pronoun, e.g. except women, i.e. women excepted, (ii) partly in imitation of (O)F. excepté excepted, and late L. abl. exceptō, which was used as a prep. by extension of the classical L. usage with a clause, exceptō quod … except that … (whence the conjunctional use of except).
