Distance Learning Program

The distance learning program at Troy University is an important and growing part of the mission of the University. A variety of courses are offered, including seven complete graduate degrees that may be completed online. Along with personalized attention from faculty members, the distance learning program (http://www.tsulearn.net) is supported by the Distance Learning Center at Troy University in Alabama.

Delivery Media

Distance Learning Center course offerings are Web interactive and are delivered through the Blackboard Internet-learning platform. Students may complete course work on an anytime/anyplace basis worldwide. Additional distance learning courses at Troy University are also provided using video-conferencing, cable TV, and Webenhanced and videotape/DVD media.

Programs of Study

There are currently seven master's degree programs and a variety of individual courses offered by the Distance Learning Center. Complete details can be found by visiting the Center's Web site.

The Master of Science in Business Administration (M.B.A.) program is designed to provide advanced study to students who have already acquired a common body of knowledge in business administration. It also offers students an opportunity to obtain advanced proficiency in decision-making skills as well as business management skills. The program also prepares students to carry out managerial responsibilities in government, business, and industry and develop the problem solving skills required in a dynamic and uncertain business environment.

The Master of Science in Criminal Justice (M.S.C.J.) program is designed to provide qualified students with an interdisciplinary graduate-level education in criminal justice. It provides students with knowledge or enhancement in the criminal justice field or leads to a terminal degree.

The Master of Science in International Relations (M.S.I.R.) program is designed to offer the graduates of diversified undergraduate programs an opportunity to obtain proficiency in international relations. Topics include foreign policy analysis, defense and security policy, comparative politics, regional and state-specific studies, international economics, and specific instruments of international affairs, such as international organizations and international law. The degree program offers a ten-course option and a twelve-course option.

The Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) degree program offers a twelve course program with nine concentrations. There is no comprehensive examination, but there is a final capstone course. The M.P.A. is designed to offer graduates of various undergraduate programs an opportunity to obtain high levels of proficiency in public management as the basis for an application of technical and managerial skills to enhance public service work.

The Master of Science in Human Resources Management (M.S.H.R.M.) is a professional degree program designed to offer graduates of diversified undergraduate programs an opportunity to obtain a proficiency in human resources management skills. The program emphasizes fundamental problem-solving, technical, and decision-making skills; communication and interpersonal competencies; and knowledge critical for success in today's and tomorrow's entrepreneurial and business organizations.

The Master of Science in Management (M.S.M.) is a professional program designed to offer the graduate of diversified undergraduate programs an opportunity to obtain proficiency in management skills and decision making that enables them to carry out managerial responsibilities in both the private and public sectors. Students complete a five-course core, a three-course concentration, and two elective courses suitable to their individual academic and employment backgrounds and specific career objectives.

Since its founding in 1887, Troy University has been recognized for the quality of its academic programs and its focus on the individual student. The Master of Education degree program is designed to strengthen and enrich current and future educators in the instructional technology area of study. The degree provides graduate study for students, teachers, and administrators whose career goals call for further education, improved abilities to use new instructional technology effectively, and performance of research and policymaking in this field. This is a noncertification program.

Special Programs

The Troy Distance Learning Center is a part of University College. The University College component of Troy University is unique to Alabama universities as it provides a global focus to Troy University's routine operations. University College sites span from Korea to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, giving meaning to the phrase "the sun never sets on Troy University." Student Services

Troy University is committed to providing a wide range of learning opportunities for a diverse student population. Students come to Troy University with hopes and high expectations. Professors teach courses using the latest course materials and techniques for rich interaction between students and professors. Professors can advise students on course options and degree requirements. The staff members in the Distance Learning Center also provide advice and assistance with admissions, registration, evaluation of transfer credit, changes of program, and processing of Intents to Graduate.

Credit Options

The Distance Learning Center offers credits through distance learning that are recorded on a Troy University transcript in the same manner as credits earned in on-campus courses. Most students enroll as degree-seeking students, but there is opportunity for students to take individual courses that may apply to degrees at other institutions of higher learning. Students should contact the Student Services staff in the Distance Learning Center to learn more about transient authorizations or other credit opportunities.

Faculty

All distance learning faculty members meet the standards set forth by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the state of Alabama, and the review agencies of the various Troy University colleges. Faculty members are full-time or adjunct members of the department granting the course credit.

Admission

Admission to the distance learning degree programs at Troy University has the same criteria as admission for any on-campus student. Interested students should access the Distance Learning Web site for more information. There is a $40 admission fee.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fees are subject to change and are published on the Distance Learning Center's Web site. With the exception of the M.B.A. program, graduate credit for the 2004–05 academic year was $290 per credit hour ($870 per 3-credit hour course), offered only through the main campus in Troy, Alabama. The fees for the M.B.A. program were $400 per credit, or $1200 for each 3-credit hour course. Additional fees include $40 for admissions, $50 for graduation, and $5 for transcripts.

Financial Aid

Troy University offers a comprehensive program of financial assistance for students pursuing a graduate degree. Application for Financial Aid forms may be obtained by e-mailing a request to the e-mail address listed in the contact section. The G.I. Bill, Veterans Administration, and tuition assistance (TA) are also means by which students who are qualified for these forms of financial aid may pay for tuition.
