Oxisols An order of mineral soils that are distinguished by the presence of an oxic horizon within 2m of the soil surface, or with plinthite close to the soil surface, and without a spodic or argillic horizon above the oxic horizon. Oxisols occur over a large part of the humid tropics, where they are usually heavily leached and exhausted by hand tillage, resulting in low fertility.
