ur·chin / ˈərchin/ • n. 1. a mischievous young child, esp. one who is poorly or raggedly dressed. ∎ archaic a goblin. 2. short for sea urchin. ORIGIN: Middle English hirchon, urchon ‘hedgehog,’ from Old Northern French herichon, based on Latin hericius ‘hedgehog.’
