family wage This was an objective adopted by male trade unionists at the turn of the nineteenth century in their fight for improved wages. It is based on the argument that a wage should be sufficient to maintain a wife and children. There was considerable female support for this view–although nowadays it is often cited as a factor in explanations of women's disadvantaged position in the labour-market.
