trade unionists at the turn of the nineteenth century in their fight for improved wages. It is based on the argument that a wage should be sufficient to maintain a wife and children. There was considerable female support for this view–although nowadays it is often cited as a factor in explanations of women's disadvantaged position in the
labour-market.
