Marshall, Alfred
Marshall, Alfred (1842–1924) An English economist, author of the highly influential
Principles of Economics (1890), and (among other things) contributor to the
marginalist revolution (see
NEO-CLASSICAL ECONOMICS) of the 1870s in economics. Marshall is principally of interest to sociologists because, in
The Structure of Social Action (1937), Talcott
Parsons reviews his work and claims to find therein a significant critique of the notion of marginal utility in an implicit theory of values, a residual category which falls logically outside the analytical scheme of economics, and provides a justification for the theoretical framework of sociology in general and Parsons's ‘action frame of reference’ in particular.
