polyploidy The condition in which an individual possesses one or more sets of
homologous chromosomes in excess of the normal two sets found in diploid organisms. It is caused by the replication within a
nucleus of complete
chromosome sets without subsequent nuclear division. Examples are triploidy (3
n), tetraploidy (4
n), hexaploidy (6
n), and octoploidy (8
n).
