hectocotylized arm In male Cephalopoda, a specialized tentacle used as an intromittent organ for the transfer of sperm. In some species of Octopoda, during copulation the tentacle is inserted into the mantle cavity and may break off; the detached hectocotylus was originally thought to be a parasitic worm, and was described as Hectocotylus (by Cuvier).
