egg-eating snakes Two genera of snakes (Colubridae), Dasypeltis from Africa and Elachistodon from India, which feed almost exclusively on eggs. Elongate projections from the neck vertebrae pierce the throat, and with throat-muscle action break the eggshell, which is regurgitated.
