Synthemidae (Synthemistidae; dragonflies; order Odonata, suborder Anisoptera) Family of dragonflies which are superficially similar to the Gomphidae. The nymphs are bottom-dwellers, and resist droughts by burying themselves very deeply. The insects frequent marshy areas, as well as fast-flowing streams. The family occurs throughout the southwestern Pacific, and 31 extant species have been described.
