Recurvirostridae (avocets, stilts; class Aves, order Charadriiformes) A family of long-legged wading birds with long bills that fly strongly and some of which swim well. Most live near water and in many species the feet are webbed, at least partly. The plumage is usually black and white, and more or less similar in males and females. The birds feed on invertebrates, fish, frogs, and some plant material. Some authorities place the family in the order Charadriiformes, others in Scolopacidae. There are 13 species found in most parts of the world except in high northern latitudes.
