Ordovician
Ordovician The second of six periods that constitute the
Palaeozoic Era, named after an ancient Celtic tribe, the Ordovices. It lasted from about 488.3 to 443.7 Ma ago. The Ordovician follows the
Cambrian and precedes the
Silurian. It is noted for the presence of various, rapidly evolving, graptolite genera (
Graptolithina) and of the earliest jawless fish.
