Haeckel, Ernst Heinrich
Haeckel, Ernst Heinrich (1834–1919) A German zoologist who became Professor of Comparative Anatomy and Director of the Zoological Institute at Jena in 1862. Convinced of the validity of the theory of organic
evolution he did much to promote it in Germany and
Darwin attributed the success of his theory in that country to Haeckel's enthusiasm. Haeckel constructed genealogical trees for many living organisms and divided animals into Protozoa (single-celled) and Metazoa (multi-celled) groups. He was an accomplished field naturalist and in 1866 he coined the word ‘
ecology’.
