Gecarcinidae

Gecarcinidae (land crabs; class Malacostraca, order Decapoda) Family of omnivorous land crabs, which spend most of their lives on land, returning to the ocean to breed. They can survive in brackish or fresh water, and are very tolerant of high levels of nitrogenous wastes within their bodies. They occur in tropical America, W. Africa, and the Indo-Pacific region.
