Auchenipteridae (subclass Actinopterygii, order Siluriformes) A family of freshwater catfish, distinguished by having a scaleless body, a zigzag lateral line along the body, a tiny adipose fin, and pairs of barbels around the mouth. There are about 25 species, found in tropical S. America.
