reed-cap instruments

reed-cap instruments. From the late 15th cent. some woodwind instr. were made with a reed-cap which kept the reed from direct contact with the player's lips. The player blew through a slit in the top of the cap to activate the reed. Most reed-cap instr. cannot overblow and have a restricted compass.
