Vogel, Jaroslav

Vogel, Jaroslav (b Pizeň, 1894; d Prague, 1970). Cz. conductor, composer, and writer. Opera cond. in Pizeň 1914–15 and in Ostrava 1919–23, returning as chief cond. 1927–43. Cond. in Prague 1923–7. Cond., Prague Nat. Th. 1949–58, chief cond. Brno State PO 1959–62. In Ostrava his perfs. of operas by Janáček, Smetana, and Novák were renowned. Wrote 4 operas. Also notable for his extensive study of Janáček's life and works (Prague 1958, abridged Eng. trans. 1962; rev. by K. Janovický, Eng. trans. 1981). Cond. first complete recording of a Janáček opera (Jenůfa, 1952).
