Ursuleac, Viorica (b Cernǎuti, Romania, 1894; d Ehrwald, Tyrol, 1985). Romanian soprano. Opera début Agram 1922 (Charlotte in Werther); Vienna Volksoper 1924–6; Frankfurt Opera 1926–30; Vienna 1930–4; Berlin 1935–7; Munich 1937–44. Salzburg Fest. 1930–4 (début as Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier), 1942, 1944, 1952. R. Strauss's favourite sop. in 1930s. Created Arabella (1933), Maria in Friedenstag (1938), and Countess in Capriccio (1942). Also sang Danae at Salzburg dress rehearsal of Die Liebe der Danae 1944. Married to cond. Clemens Krauss. CG début 1934. Had 83 roles in her repertory and sang 506 perfs. of 12 Strauss roles during her career.
