Surprise Symphony. Nickname of Haydn's Sym. in G major, No.94 (Hob. 1:94)., comp. London 1791, so called because of sudden forte drumbeat in slow movt. In Ger., sym. is known as mit dem Paukenschlag (with the drumstroke).
