Gen. mus. dir., Aachen 1953–7, Wiesbaden 1957–9, Cologne 1959–63. Cond. Vienna SO 1960–70. Gen. mus. dir. Hamburg PO 1961–73. Cond. Orch. de la Suisse Romande 1970–80. Gen. mus. dir., Bavarian State Opera, Munich, 1971–93 (Intendant from 1982). Chief cond. Philadelphia Orch. from 1992. Bayreuth Fest. 1957–62; Salzburg Fest. début 1957; Amer. début 1964 (with Vienna SO); CG début 1972 (with Bavarian State Opera in Strauss operas). Fine accompanist (to H. Prey, etc.).
