Previn, André (George) [ Andreas Ludwig Priwin] (b Berlin, 1929). Ger.-born pianist, conductor, and composer (Amer. cit. 1943). Went to USA 1939. Once a jazz pianist, he later worked as composer and arranger of film mus. in Hollywood. Début as cond., St Louis SO 1962. Cond.-in-chief, LSO, 1968–79; settled in Eng. where he won popular following as presenter of mus. on TV. Champion of Eng. mus., notably Walton and Vaughan Williams (whose 9 syms. he recorded). Cond. Houston SO, 1967–9, Pittsburgh SO 1976–85, mus. dir. RPO 1985–7 and prin. cond. 1987–92, mus. dir. Los Angeles PO 1985–90. Salzburg début 1973. Comps. incl. vc., vn., pf., hn., and gui. concs., chamber mus., and works for solo pf., mus. for ‘play for actors and orch’, by Tom Stoppard, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, prod. London 1978 (with LSO). Hon. KBE 1996.
