chanteuse. As a child, assisted her father in his circus act. At 15 became street singer and was nicknamed
Piaf (sparrow) because of her ragged appearance. Radio début 1936 and was helped by Maurice Chevalier to become leading music-hall star. During war entertained Fr. prisoners in Ger. and was accused of collaboration but exonerated. Toured USA 1947. Her most famous songs were
Non, je ne regrette rien and her own
La vie en rose, sung in a powerful, strident style which captivated audiences. Wrote 2 books of memoirs, pubd. 1958 and 1964.
