Lied von der Erde, Das (The Song of the Earth). Sym. for cont. (or bar.), ten., and orch. by Mahler, being settings of 6 Ger. versions by Hans Bethge (with additions by Mahler) of Chinese poems (some wrongly attrib. by Bethge). The movts. are: 1. Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde (Drinking-Song of Earth's Sorrow); 2. Der Einsame im Herbst (The Lonely One in Autumn); 3. Von der Jugend (Of Youth); 4. Von der Schönheit (Of Beauty); 5. Der Trunkene im Frühling (The Drunkard in Spring); 6. Der Abschied (The Farewell). Comp. 1907–9. F.p. Munich 1911, London 1914, Philadelphia 1916.
