Liebermann, Rolf (b Zurich, 1910; d 1999). Swiss composer, pupil of Vogel. Head of orch. div., Swiss Radio 1950–7, head of mus. N. Ger. Radio, Hamburg, 1957–9, dir. Hamburg Opera 1959–73 and 1985–8, Paris Opéra 1973–80. Champion of modern works, his Hamburg years seeing many splendid prods. of new operas by Einem, Searle, Menotti, Henze, Penderecki, Kagel, and others. Used 12-note system in his own works which incl.: operas: Leonore 40/45 (Basle 1952), Penelope (Salzburg 1954), The School for Wives (Louisville 1955, rev. as Die Schule der Frauen, Salzburg 1957), and La forêt (1987); orchestral: Furioso (1947), Sym. No.1 (1949), conc. for jazz band and sym. orch. (1954); also pf. quintet (1987); and songs.
