Legrenzi, Giovanni

Legrenzi, Giovanni (b Clusone, nr. Bergamo, 1626; d Venice, 1690). It. composer and choirmaster. Organist in Bergamo 1645–55, Ferrara 1656–65 (while there he wrote his first operas). At Conservatorio dei Mendicanti, Venice, 1671–81, when he became deputy choirmaster at St Mark's succeeding to the chief post in 1685. Comp. 19 operas, much instr. mus., 7 oratorios, masses, psalms, motets, church sonatas.
