Bach's title, borrowed from Kuhnau, for hpd. and org. works issued in 4 sections: (a) 6 partitas or German Suites, 1731; (b) 2 pieces for double-manual hpd., the Italian Concerto and Partita in B minor (or French Overture) 1735; (c) org. works incl. ‘St Anne’ Fugue 1739; (d) ‘Goldberg’ Variations, 1742.
