Kempff, Wilhelm (Walter Friedrich)

Kempff, Wilhelm (Walter Friedrich) (b Jüterbog, 1895; d Positano, It., 1991). Ger. pianist and composer. Reputation grew from 1916 as virtuoso pianist, especially in assoc. with Berlin PO. Dir., Stuttgart Hochschule für Musik, 1924–9. London début 1951, Amer. début NY 1964. Gave annual courses at Positano from 1957. Salzburg Fest. 1958. Noted for playing of Beethoven and classics. Comp. opera King Midas, 2 syms., vn. conc., pf. conc., chamber mus., and choral works.
