Gui, Vittorio

Gui, Vittorio (b Rome, 1885; d Florence, 1975). It. conductor and composer. Début Rome, 1907 (La Gioconda). Ass. to Toscanini, Milan, 1923–5 (début with Salome) and 1932–4. Cond. Florence Orch. 1928–40, helped to found (1933) Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, where he cond. rarities such as Luisa Miller, Armide, and Médée. First It. invited to cond. at Salzburg Fest., preceding Toscanini by 3 weeks in 1933. Took over from Toscanini as cond. of Falstaff for 1938 fest. CG début 1938. Cond., Glyndebourne Opera 1952–60, after which ‘artistic counsellor’. Last cond. at Glyndebourne in 1964. Noted for revivals of neglected and rare Rossini operas, e.g. L'italiana in Algeri (Turin 1925, with Supervia) and Le Comte Ory (Glyndebourne, 1955). Comp. operas, sym.-poems, and author of critical essays.
