Dir., Mainz municipal coll. of mus. 1929–33. Cond., Vienna Concert Orch. and Bach Soc. 1933–8. Settled in Edinburgh 1938, lect. Edinburgh Univ. 1945–65. Author of books on Brahms, Wagner, Schubert, Verdi, and Vienna. Comps. incl. 5 operas; 4 syms.; Lilliburlero: Improvisations on a Martial Melody, orch. (1946); vn. conc.; vc. conc.; concertinos for pf., str. and vn., str.; 2 str. qts.; pf. qt.; pf. trio; str. trio; choral mus.; pf. pieces. OBE 1964.
