Gagliano, Marco da

Gagliano, Marco da (b Florence, 1582; d Florence, 1643). It. composer, one of the founders of opera. Educated as priest. Choirmaster, Florence Cath. 1608. His opera Dafne (1607, prod. Mantua 1608) was rated highly by Peri; its preface anticipated Gluck in advocating the importance of dramatic reality. Collab. with Peri on Il medoro (1616, lost). Dafne and last opera, La flora (1628), survive. Also comp. madrigals, motets, etc.
