Four Temperaments, The 1. Sub-title of
Nielsen's Sym. No.2 in C minor, Op.16 (
De Fire Temperamenter), 1901–2, inspired by a painting of that name, each movt. being descriptive of one of the medieval ‘temperaments’ of human character: choleric, phlegmatic, melancholic, sanguine.
2. Sub-title of Hindemith's
Theme and Variations for str. and pf., 1940, each of the 4 variations denoting a temperament, in the order melancholic, sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric. F.p. Boston 1944. Also ballet, f.p. NY 1946.
