Dibdin, Charles (
b Southampton, 1745;
d London, 1814). Eng. composer, impresario, and singer. Choirboy, Winchester Cath. 1756–9. From 1764 in London wrote words and mus. of many popular ‘musicals’. In 1789 began ‘table entertainments’ at which he sang his own songs. Th. manager 1796–1805. Best-known songs are ‘The Bells of Aberdovey’ from
Liberty Hall (Drury Lane 1785) and the beautiful ‘Tom Bowling’ from table entertainment
The Oddities (Lyceum 1789).
