Dart, (Robert) Thurston (b Kingston-upon-Thames, 1921; d London, 1971). Eng. organist, harpsichordist, and musicologist. After war service, studied in Belgium, 1945. Ass. lect. in mus., Cambridge Univ. from 1947, prof. 1962–4. Prof. of mus., London Univ., from 1964, establishing faculty of mus. at King's Coll., London. Undertook research into early mus., publishing many articles on subject and making many fine recordings as solo kbd. player and continuo player for firm of Oiseau-Lyre. Played with Boyd Neel Orch. from 1948; art. dir. Philomusica of London 1955–9. Influential teacher. Ed., Galpin Society Journal 1947–54; secretary Musica Britannica, 1950–65. Authority on J. S. Bach, kbd. and consort mus. of 16th, 17th, and 18th cents., and John Bull.
