Clarke, Rebecca

The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music | 1996 | Copyright

Clarke, Rebecca (b Harrow, 1886; d NY, 1979). Eng. composer, violist, and violinist. In 1908 became Stanford's first woman comp. student at RCM and was encouraged by him to take up va. From 1911 played in various chamber groups with the d'Arányi sisters, Myra Hess, and Suggia. Comp. 58 songs and part-songs and 24 instr. chamber works.
